Congress Has a Responsibility to Fight Back—Here’s How We Hold Them Accountable
Need a reason to call your member of Congress? How about Social Security, Medicaid, or Epstein for starters?
In times of political turmoil and fractured discourse, Congress's responsibility to act as a bulwark against injustice and regression is more critical than ever. When elected officials stand up with courage and conviction, they illuminate the path forward for justice and equity, reminding us all of the power inherent in a principled stand. Senator Cory Booker’s 25-hour speech on the Senate floor exhibited one such moment of inspiration—a testament to unwavering dedication and the impact of heartfelt advocacy.
Honestly, though, I’m not seeing enough fight from the Dems.
Senator Booker’s Stand: An Example of Leadership and Tenacity … but What’s Next?
Senator Cory Booker's marathon speech was not just an exercise in endurance; it was a clarion call to the nation, urging Congress to fulfill its duty to fight back against polices that threaten our collective values. Over the course of 25 hours, Booker addressed key issues from healthcare to social justice, underscoring the urgency of legislative action to protect the most vulnerable among us. And do you know what the core content of his speech was? Stories. Stories that his staff had collected from his constituents.
Here’s a 15-second video story from our Storyteller Project:
Holding Congress Accountable: Your Role as a Citizen
As constituents, it's our duty to hold Congress accountable to ensure they represent the voices and needs of the people. Us. We have so damned many reasons to fight back now that it’s hard to know where to start. Demand transparency, action, and integrity from our elected officials. Here's how you can play a pivotal role in this process:
1. Engage in Continuous Dialogue
Engage regularly with your representatives through calls, emails, and social media. Programs like Countable and 5 Calls simplify the process of reaching out and staying informed about key legislative actions. Regular engagement keeps pressure on Congress to prioritize the issues that matter to you.
2. Advocate Through Storytelling
Share your personal stories and those of your community to humanize the impact of policy decisions. Whether through videos, letters, or public forums, compelling narratives can influence lawmakers and rally public support. We’d love to have you join us in the Video Activists Academy and learn how to capture compelling stories that we can share through Rural GroundGame’s platforms.
3. Educate and Mobilize Your Community
Empower those around you by providing information on congressional actions and decisions. Organize local meetings and workshops to educate and inspire community members to participate in advocacy efforts, creating a collective force for change.
4. Attend Town Halls and Public Meetings
Showing up at town halls and public meetings is a direct way to confront representatives and demand accountability. These forums are opportunities to voice your concerns and observe firsthand how your elected officials are working for you.
Are you represented by a no-show Republican? Someone too chicken to do an in-person town hall? Conduct a town hall without him/her, pose questions to an empty chair or cardboard cutout, and get it all on video.
5. Support and Acknowledge Courageous Acts
When leaders like Senator Booker take bold stands, support them by amplifying their efforts and recognizing their courage. Share their stories and contributions widely to encourage other lawmakers to act with similar resolve. And don’t forget to call your MoCs when they do the right thing … all you need to do is dial (202) 224-3121, get connected to your congressperson’s office and voice your thanks to a staffer or leave a voicemail.
